The Defense and Security Committee Discussed Amendments to the Defense Code

At a sitting of the Defense and Security Committee, Deputy Defense Minister Grigol Giorgadze presented the draft Defense Code.

According to the reporter, following the adoption of the new Defense Code, the procedures for military registration of conscripts and for undergoing national military service have undergone significant changes.

He noted that the practical implementation of the Code’s provisions has revealed the need to clarify a number of issues, which led to the preparation of the draft amendments.

According to the Deputy Minister, the amendments will clarify matters related to activities compatible with the status of a servicemember; replace the term “temporary suspension from position” with “dismissal from position”; regulate issues related to military registration and conscription into national military service; and specify the procedure for transferring an individual to national military service in the event of termination of a contract for service in the form of contractual military service.

The reporter also stated that the amendments regulate issues concerning secondary employment of personnel employed in the Defense Forces.

In particular, such individuals will be allowed, with prior written consent from the Ministry, to engage for a period of up to one year in scientific, pedagogical, creative, and information technology-related activities.

The Committee approved the Draft for the I reading.
